Success Story: Celebrating Evergy’s Success

Data as Simple as Black & White

EPRI’s COLM Quick Guides pave the way … again!

This Success Story is all about celebrating Evergy’s success. Matt Hall, Wolf Creek’s Senior Director of Strategic Projects, utilized EPRI’s COLM Quick Guides to defer or eliminate time-based preventive maintenance activities in lieu of machine analytics. In the nuclear race to be second, Matt was first.

EPRI and Integral Analytics co-wrote a success story called “Evergy’s Wolf Creek Saves an Estimated $3.85 Million Through Condition-Based Maintenance Implementation.” This success story outlines the who, what, when, where, why, and how Matt was able to achieve success. Here are a few excerpts from the success story:

“Matt Hall was tasked with reducing periodic maintenance activities while maintaining a positive return on investment for the project.

“Matt approached this challenge using EPRI’s COLM Quick Guides as well as asset maintenance history to decide which equipment to target first. EPRI worked with the Wolf Creek Engineering and Innovation teams to perform a detailed analysis for the adoption of ESA and vibration monitoring technology. Leveraging ESA technology with Wolf Creek’s existing vibration technology yields approximately 75% failure mode coverage collectively.

“By leveraging ESA and vibration technology, the following PMs have been eliminated or moved to condition-based for the evaluated pump/motor sets:

  1. - Impact testing (eliminated)

  2. - Manual vibration measurement (replaced with COLM)

  3. - Overhauls, Megger testing, offline testing, running amperage checks, and oil sample/change (extended)”

Here’s what Matt had to say about the Quick Guides themselves, “The Quick Guides were ahead of their time with respect to technology. With recent advanced in technology along with condition-based monitoring techniques, sites can now more easily implement COLM principles to achieve predictable and repeatable savings.”

Aaron Hussey, our Principal and founder had this to say, “Matt showed the nuclear industry that, with the right partnerships and the right support, nuclear facilities can reduce time-based maintenance tasks by implementing condition-based maintenance practices through advanced data analytics.”

They’re all heavy metal fans!
